The latest Drew David dj mix has been completed and the flash drives have come in. I can finally put the finishing touches on my latest promotional project. Huzzah! November 2008. Has it really been that long? The new look for spindlebox.com has been put on hold indefinitely unitl I can decide how I want the site laid out. But I'm sure you could tell that already... September 2007. A major restructuring of the spindlebox website is now underway. The goals are to make this site fully compliant with the XHTML 1.0 transitional spec, better use of CSS in the layout and formatting, and some DHTML to replace the inline frames. On the non-geek side, I'll be creating a layout with more clearly defined areas between design (Andy McMillan) and music (Drew David). August 2007. August 4th 2007 is the date for Trancemission 10. A milestone event, this year's festivities will be held in the scenic Fraser Canyon at Hell's Gate. This ain't no rock quarry. The flyer is finished and looks fantastic, if I do say so myself. August 2007. Completely behind with my updates, yet again... On July 14/07 I played at Fana with the Beheshto crew, and had a great weekend on the Sunshine Coast of BC. Beautiful location, friendly people and good tunes all night. May 2007. Looking for something techno-related this coming Saturday, June 2nd? Then check out Offset @ The Anza Club to hear myself play the middle slot between resident DJs Colleen Arndt and James Fillman. Starts at 10pm. May 2007. Soundproof's latest event, Attack of The Killer Beats, took a long time to happen but was well worth the wait. What a great party! I completely neglected to mention anything – I even designed the flyer – but I blame it all on Facebook. I played a solid set, got positive feedback and had a good old time. Next stop, Trancemission 10. May 2007. It's finally happened. I now have my own Facebook profile. Couldn't help myself after resisting the MySpace thing for so long. Who knows, maybe I'll create a MySpace page too. Top 5 chart updated. May 2007. Been some time since my last post, so let's see... my set at the Lotus was a lot of fun, I met some new people – including Morgan Muffler and Snailrider from Wanted – and I was paid handsomely for my efforts. Kudos to the work done by the organizers of this event. March 2007. I'll be playing a tag set with Son of Jacob at the next Lotus Long Weekend, on Thurs. April 5th. Come early - these events are always packed. March 2007. Managed to catch Sammy Dee of Perlon play a DJ set here in Vancouver the other night - what a great time! I haven't danced like that in a long while. January 2007. Happy New Year all, it feels great to be back in Vancouver! No word yet on the Torq contest thing, but I'm going to rework the track a bit and post the results here in the next couple weeks. New top 5 list also up. December 2006. Going just a bit more crazy this month with non-stop dinner parties and my first trip back to Ontario in over two years. Plus, I've submitted an entry to the Torq Vinyl Contest which had to be done before Ang and I depart for the holidays. Merry Christmas everyone! November 2006. Ang and I have recently moved into a new pad downtown, so it's been a bit quiet in the music department. I'm gradually getting used to the change of space and am trying out some new audio toys, so expect to hear something in the near future. New top 5 list posted. October 2006. The top 5 list for this month is actually a combined list for Sept/October since I was too busy at the end of August enjoying the last of the hot summer days. Life hasn't been all beach recliners and drinks with umbrellas in the them - I have a new track ready for preview: Fried Plastic and you'll find it in the Media section. August 2006. The top 5 list for August has been posted AND my latest track Fidel Fidel is available for preview... link will open a new window. June 2006. July 22nd marks the date of the 9th installment of the long-running Trancemission series by Soundproof. This party is free and in the great outdoors, so bring warm clothes, food and basic camping gear. Flyer here. June 2006. Thanks to those who came out for the Horton show - we had a great time putting on our first event after a long hiatus. Pictures from various folks can be found on the Soundproof site, as well as on Flickr.com June 2006. The next major Soundproof event will be taking place on Saturday, June 17th. Horton Hears a Groove is $20 in advance, starts late and goes early. =] For those unable to make it out, we're looking at July 22nd for the next installment in the Trancemission series. June 2006. You'll have a chance to listen to myself and Son of Jacob this coming Sunday, June 11th. I'll be playing a tag set with Son of Jacob in the Techno room along with MUX (Live PA), Miss Innocent and Klara. $10 gets you into all 3 rooms, starts at 10pm ends at 3am. April 2006. What the?... It's April already? Okay then, the new top 5 list is a bit late this month, but better late then never. February 2006. My track Random Blues is finished and ready for listening... I'd describe it like a jacked-up Trans-Am with a flecked-paint job and fuzzy dice cruising the main drag. Why not? February 2006. The chart list is now up for February. I'll be posting a new track in the next day or two - a few levels need to be tweaked, but it's pretty much ready to go. January 2006. And a Happy New Year to all... 2005 was a full year of trial and success, joy and sadness, and birth and death - the arrival of my new niece Julia, and the departure of Lee Matasi. Will this be the month I finally begin to record my latest DJ mix CD? Who knows... November 2005. A link to Caloniefe has now been placed in the Media section - check it out! November 2005. I have a new track finished and ready to post... unfortunately, after updating my computer system to Mac OS X 'Tiger' I'm having some issues with crucial audio plugins. I've just downloaded some updates though, so I'll trust they can solve my problems. November 2005. Seeing as November is nearly over, the chart list I'm posting today is a bit more eclectic than usual. Fingers are crossed in hopes that my December chart arrives in a more timely fashion. Yeah... November 2005. It looks as though Primary - the latest Soundproof event will be postponed. With our venue falling through two weeks before the show, it didn't leave us much time to find an alternative. Stay tune for a rescheduled date. October 2005. Whoah, been a while since my last post... I've nearly finished the track selection process for my next DJ mix CD, currently untitled. It's been three years since my last full-length CD so I'm excited at the chance of strectching myself both technically, and creatively with this effort. Selecting the 'right' tracks for this mix has been a big obstacle, but I'm confident the mixing can begin soon. September 2005. The summer is winding down and with it comes the Lotus Long Weekend party. I'll be opening the third room with techno located at Lick Bar. Also playing: Noah Pred (Immigrant, Metapath), Rennie Foster (Futago, Synewave) and the live PA of the Frazzletones. Tix are $12 advance / $15 door. August 2005. I had a great time this past weekend at the Sama party. Despite the rain there was a good turnout and enough shelter to keep us dry and warm. You can search for photos on Flickr by looking up the tag 'Sama.' August 2005. I'll be playing another outdoor party on Aug. 27th. Hosted by Beheshto and Ducky. August 2005. The latest Top 5 chart is now up. July 2005. Thankyou to everyone who came out for Trancemission 8 - the annual free outdoor party by Soundproof. The weather was beautiful and I got a good response from my latest track, Magnetique. July 2005. The chart list for July is now up. An unexpected opportunity came up this past weekend to play a tag set with DJ Gargamel from Germany. A big thankyou to the organizers of Fluid who were very welcoming and took great concern after I managed to gash my head on the corner of the DJ table; luckily no stitches were required. June 2005. Magnetique is the new track, and you'll find it in the media section. Comments, questions, hefty release contracts (ha) are welcome. June 2005. The Top 5 chart for June is now up. I've been working on a new tune - a mix of DSP glitch and interesting female vocal snippets carried over techno rhythms. I'll post a link when I've finished a proper mixdown. May 2005. Acid Jeans. Alright, here it is. I'm still trying to write something that fits within my preferred style but this one has some good things to say - though perhaps a bit too epic... May 2005. I'll be posting a link here in the next couple days to a track I've been working on - it's called Acid Jeans and features heavily layered 303 lines and a groovy techno thump. Speaking of which, acid techno/house seems to be making a comeback of late (not that it went away) with new tunes and remixes in my latest top 5 chart. May 2005. A big thankyou to everyone who came out for 8-bit. Hard to believe it was over half a year since my last show with SoundProof - and in spite of the technical goof-ups I had a great time once my set got rolling along. Those are the chances you take when you bring more than just records to a gig... April 2005. April is still a few days away but the new Top 5 list was itching to get posted. Special note to the release on Monoid by David F - a person who has been kind and supportive to my own production efforts. March 2005. The new colour scheme is now online, as well as the complete links page. The Top 5 list for March has also been posted. February 2005. The photo gallery and dj mix discography from the media section is now complete. February 2005. I'm playing again at Lick's techno night (thursday the 10th), located in Vanouver's Gastown. Somewhere between 11pm and 1am along with littlejon and Son of Jacob. February 2005. Updates to the media page have now made their way online - the photo gallery is live and the mix discog is getting there too. I can already predict changes to the files I just uploaded but I want this site to look great, not just good. January 2005. Various cosmetic changes have taken place over the last couple days here, and now that those changes are out of the way and I'm happier with the design, I can focus on the remaining uncompleted areas. Now to work on that bio writeup... January 2005. Happy New Year all! Angela and I are back from a sunny and warm holiday visit to Sydney, Australia. It was nice to spend the Christmas season with family and rack up a few air miles in the process. I'm looking forward to getting back to some projects, including this website and my portfolio. In the meantime I've posted a new Top 5 list and updated the Archive. December 2004. Pictures from Cuba are now online – nothing from Varadero at the moment, but Havana is well covered. December 2004. No, I'm not dead but it has been a long time since I've posted any news updates. So what to say... I'm still trying to get settled into my new place and married life, and I've been finding it hard to find my groove as far as work flow goes. I also lack an internet connection at home right now, so I've been making excuses to work on music or other tasks (i.e. cleaning). I have been working on a gallery of pictures from our trip to Cuba which nears completion and I'll be posting a link here when it is ready. October 2004. New Top 5 List for October has now been posted. September 2004. Updates will be hard to come by for the next 4 weeks - I'm gettin' hitched on Oct. 10th and will be in Cuba for a couple weeks. Oh, I'm moving at the end of this month too... =/ September 2004. A quick hello to Amy Rubin - a friend from my highschool days whom I ran into a couple weeks ago. Hey Amy, I want to know if you've listened to those CDs - send me an email! September 2004. Last night I had the pleasure of opening for Ben Nevile at Lick Nightclub's bi-weekly techno event. For all you Vancouverites who have yet to check this night out, I highly recommend the next show on the 23rd with Tomas Jirku. September 2004. As you can see the new website is on the way, and if you've been poking around a bit, you'll see that there's still some way to go. I really wanted to show off the new look though, so I decided to go online with it anyway. Other sections will be added in the order of completion, plus various visual /navigational enhancements for the finishing touch. September 2004. Going out tonight with Ang to hear Chris Liberator play some serious acid techno. It's not totally my scene, but I've heard good things so I'm stoked to hear him play. August 2004. Can't believe I forgot to post this. Back in June I mentioned a track I was working on - Aboe - and it's finished. Finished for quite some time now, but somehow I neglected to post a link on my site. Check it out and let me know what you think. Other news... Thursday, Sept. 9th I'll be playing at Lick's techno night (located on Abbott Street in Gastown), along with Ben Nevile and Danjel Van Tijn. Come out and support an evening of tasteful techno with a friendly atmosphere. August 2004. I may have picked the worst time to redesign the site – but really, just look at it – I had already agreed to a couple other projects along the same timeline, including an album design for my good friend Kent, a remix competition which I had to drop out of, several DJ gigs, and oh yeah, wedding stuff. I've also decided to improve my web design / development skills with this redesign, so I've got this huge "missing manual" book for dreamweaver, plus the "definitive guide to CSS" to try and seek ways to make my code tighter and my design more expressive. These are good things, but my target date for project completion is becoming more hazy over time. August 2004. Noor by Beheshto and Ducky.ca was a fantastic bookend to a week plagued by rainy skies and uncertain weather. The rain ended early on saturday, the stars shone clearly that night and the sun greeted us the next day. Thanks to everyone who showed up with friendly attitudes and their dogs =] There are pictures of this event here and here and here. August 2004. Five more days until the next outdoor event by Beheshto and Ducky.ca. Noor – taking place on August 7th – will be two stages and 15 DJs strong in the beautiful backwoods of BC, Canada (approx. 2.5 hours north of Vancouver). Tickets are 10 bucks. In other news... The redesign of the Spindlebox website is coming along, though slightly behind schedule. The design itself is nearly complete, with the conversion to html and such soon to follow. A new Top 5 list is also up. July 2004. Just got back from Montana - Ang and I spent the week relaxing and enjoying quality time with Chris and Leah, who proved to be very likeable people - a great time for sure! Other updates: a new top 5 list is up, as well as a minor addition to the events page. Also, a major overhaul of the Spindlebox website is currently in progress - I'm combining my design and music personas into one cohesive location, and hope to have the new site online within the month. June 2004. Okay, June already... a number of updates to the site, including a new Top 5 list and some well-needed additions to the Events page. Also, a new track is on the way – called Aboe – finishing touches are nearly done, and I'll post a link here as soon as I can. April 2004. Ether Planet is finished and now ready for your listening pleasure. My feelings are mixed for this track - it ended up becoming something I hadn't really envisioned, but it was a good learning experience and several revisions may be born from it. (link removed) April 2004. Cow catapults, flying boars, Python quotes and a giant, crushing foot - that was the scene at Soundproof's latest show: CP2. Great visuals, stoked party goers and probably the best sound we've had in a long time - thanks to the semi-surround setup of Mackie monitors. On thursday before the show I came down with something... I was sick all weekend so this one took a lot out of me, but luckily the water, tums and multi-vitamins kept me running. Thanks to everyone who helped make CP2 a smashing success! Unfortunately I ran out of time during my set so I was unable to play my latest track - disappointing as I worked really hard to have it ready. Ah well, those things happen. March 2004. I have uploaded a (very) brief preview loop to my track Ether Planet... which I plan to play in full at the next Soundproof show scheduled for April 3rd. It's been about 4 months since the last party so we're really stoked about the ideas we have for this one. (link removed) March 2004. After a brief delay, Soundproof is now in the planning stages for the next party - mark your calendars on April 3rd for the next show. Party name, theme and props promise to be wacky and not what they may seem (more on this later). In the meantime I'll be playing at Tribeca on March 6th - a local eatery/bar here in Vancouver with room for seating and mingling and grooving. Also playing will be Petr Benda and Jeff Johnston - thanks to Jeff Griffiths (aka Anistropic) for hooking me up! My latest track Ether Planet is nearly finished the writing stage, save for a few tweaks here and there - final mix should be ready in a week or two. Watch this space for a preview loop. January 2004. Happy New Year everyone! I have recently returned from 10 days in Ontario, spending quality time with family and friends over the Christmas holidays. It was a little hectic travelling back and forth to various cities (plus a dreaded visit to the dentist), but it was well worth the trip. And now a few things music related: I'm going to focus more on writing and production for the next little while, and will take a bit of a break from recording DJ sets. The next Soundproof show should be in February and I'd like to be able to debut a new track at that time - there are a few contenders already, so it's simply a matter of picking one and committing time and effort to it. I failed to mention this before but the final installment to my "Four Seasons" DJ mixes was completed in November of 2003 - the Damp mix is available in the media section and was skillfully mastered for your speakers by John Tennant (thanks John!). Last but not least, there is a new Top 5 list posted for January. November 2003. Soundproof is gearing up for another show on November the 8th - it's called 11 (2 points if you can guess the reference), and I highly recommend you get your tickets in advance > check the Events page for more details. October 2003. YOU ARE HERE... For the past 3 months my main website - spindlebox - has been a jump pad straight through to my DJ site, and offered no link to my design portfolio. I've been trying to decide how to integrate the two personas into one site [design + music], and the solution keeps pointing towards a complete redesign of, well, everything. But for now: the portfolio September 2003. A very big 'thank you' to Mirka Cerny @ CJSF for inviting myself and Petr Benda into the studio last Friday evening. Our set was rather eclectic, with Petr starting things off in a 98bpm minimal fashion, somehow merging into tech house, then up into a more banging techno set for the last hour. The three hours went by much quicker than we thought it would, and overall we had a lot of fun - lack of a clear directive aside - we hope to get another opportunity for this and we promise to be better prepared. September 2003. Now that the autumn season is here, track selection has begun for the final installment of my 'mini-mix' CDs. In a nutshell, these approx. 30 minute dj sets attempt to convey the essense of the present season / weather. I've dubbed the overall project "The Four Seasons" and it's been a nice change from recording full-length (60 to 70 minute) mixes. I'm just waiting for my Cycloops to arrive in the mail, and the last session can begin. September 2003. Looks like I'll be on the airwaves... Tune in to CJSF 90.1FM on Friday, Sept. 19th for a combined set between myself and Petr Benda. The program – running between 10pm and 2am – is called Life at 140 BPM and is hosted by Mirka L Cerny. Hope it's alright if we play at 134 BPM instead... September 2003. New Top 5 list for September has been posted. August 2003. It's been about a month since my last update -- I took some vacation time in July to go camping with my girlfriend, first out to Chilliwack Lake for a couple days, then up Vancouver Island to Campbell River / Quadra Island for about 5 days. Fantastic scenery and a chance to soak up the sun and do some reading. =] A new Top 5 list has been posted for August. August 2003. Trancemission 6 is nearly upon us - a yearly tradition, this outdoor event (on the 16th) is free and will feature at least 4 guest DJ's, including DJ Noah. Party info can be found here. July 2003. My latest DJ mix is finished, and can be downloaded in the media section. This mix – called Suntan – is a bit more pumping than what I recorded for Spring, but many of the tracks have a nice 'song' quality to them, intriguing rhythmic quality and a warmth that only Summer can bring. =] July 2003. Work has begun on a new DJ mix for the summer. Following in the same vein as my previous mix for Spring (Melt), the collection of tracks will focus on the housier side of techno, but this time with a much stronger tribal influence. My target finishing date is the week of the 6th. June 2003. Stewart
